The more you think

Mondays are just young Fridays

How thankful are you?
Do you, each day, express your gratitude to those deserving of acknowledgement?
I know I don’t, certainly not often enough, and I have so much to be thankful for. We all do. Yet, how many of us practice an attitude of gratitude?
There are so many things to be thankful for, and even more people.
I was reminded very early this morning as I listened to a podcast. It was too dark to get up and too warm under my covers, so I selected the most recent TED Radio Hour episode entitled The Gratitude Chain.
In the podcast, lifestyle experimental journalist A.J. Jacobs talks about his latest book Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey, in which he thanks everybody involved in making his morning cup of coffee; from the barista to the workers who harvested the beans.
Coffee is a subject near and dear to my heart, especially morning coffee (the best kind), so I settled in for a good listen.
Jacobs has a reputation for deeply exploring a concept when he writes, perhaps most widely known for his 2007 book The Year of Living Dangerously: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible.
Interesting about this particular extended TED talk was that Jacobs included in podcasts that inspired him, those he was most thankful for, during the writing of the book.
I could write so much more on this topic, and the overall benefits of gratitude, but would encourage you to listen to this work.
I’m thankful I did.
I was again reminded that we don’t express our personal gratitude enough to those who care, those who listen, and those who furnish our lives with good food, good company and conversation and, yes, good coffee.

There Is No Explanation

We try to hold on a little longer to the remains of a crappy day, to those blue jeans that no longer fit (and likely never will again), or that crumpled letter that is more than a reminder of the person you’d like nothing more than to forget.
These, among so many other things, clutter the mind.
These are the shadows that taint the lucidity of the life you’ve managed thus far.
These are the smudges that block your vision.
There is no explanation to what we emotionally hoard.
We know, deep down, there is little value in the things we hold onto. We have also learned by trial and error that if you let go of some stuff you won’t release the pain. You will simply free up space for some other worthless memento.
There will always be reminders.
It is our nature, like it or not, to hang on to memories.
Embrace those that serve you well and let others fall by the wayside.
You will find something else to take its place.
You always do.

Only Wednesday

Wednesday sits naked
and ordinary
waiting

between the bookends of social Saturday
and restive Sunday. The day is
little more

than a cluster of hours or a stop on the
treadmill. Indecisive and
lonely

nobody chooses a Wednesday. Nothing
happens
on a Wednesday

and it’s the same each week.

Sept 11/01, a Tuesday. London Subway bombings: July 7/05, a Tuesday, also July 21/05,
and also a Tuesday. Assassinations: John Lennon on a Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. a
Thursday, and John F. Kennedy a Friday. Kurt Cobain’s body was discovered on a
Wednesday, but he chose his way out three days earlier. Nothing happens on a
Wednesday.

There are fewer concerts mid-week, and opening night is never a Wednesday. They
never open the Olympics on a Wednesday. Nobody gets married on a Wednesday.

Yet I will choose Wednesday, or I will start with a Wednesday. I'll begin with a page, a
place where I can plant my thoughts. I have many thoughts, each week, every day (even
on Wednesday), but I will commit to posting something once a week. There are seven
days to choose from, and I chose Wednesday.

Now I may post something else on some other day, I’m like that (a true Gemini). If I am
moved or if I have time, if the stars align or the moon gives me a nudge, or if something
is really bothering me, I won’t wait for Wednesday. But I will post something each
Wednesday.

Something will happen each Wednesday, every week. Right here. If you want to see, or
wish to be reminded, sign up. There will also be a daily breath (usually 140 characters or
less) and it will not be limited to Wednesday, but will, or should, arrive every day.

Until Wednesday . . .
