Those famous four notes: unmistakably classical, inimitably Beethoven.

Buh, buh, buh, buuuuh.

Symphony No. 5.

I had the absolute pleasure of hearing the score performed live yesterday by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. It was the second time in my life that I have heard the music live, the last time was in 2011 (also performed by our local orchestra). Chances are, many of the same musicians were performing the piece both times. Deep in talent and history: that’s the kind of orchestra the WSO is.

Buh, buh, buh, buuuuh: there is so much more to the music

Yes, there are softer more luxurious passages over several stirring movements, but Beethoven got right down to business with those abrupt, ominous four notes making repeated appearances throughout.

Truly, Beethoven’s Fifth is one remarkable piece of music

Yesterday, and forever, those same four notes remind us how joyous the music is; a cultural reference that continues to make one of the most famous (if not the most famous) composers relevant.

Splendid. Stirring. Sensational.

The WSO opened its season this past weekend. There is so much more music to look forward to.

   Should we not allow room 
for the unplanned or unexpected, 
or make space for pleasure 
during our inevitable routine 
and commitments, our lives 
will continue to contract. 
   We need to always seek ways 
to expand our lives, our minds, 
and our being.
   Somehow the soul knows 
   what requires attention.

for your mind

It will soon become time when we find ourselves spending more time inside.

   Mostly because of the weather, which will only get worse before it gets better, the comfort of home becomes more of a routine. After a while, boredom will settle in.

   Maybe it’s time for a new habit or hobby?

   On the most fundamental level, an activity or class can get us out of the house. On a higher level, it fills our time and broadens the mind.

   Couldn’t we all use more expansive thinking?

   Is there something you’ve been dying to do? Or is there something you used to do that got pushed aside because you got busy doing something else? Needlepoint, knitting or crochet, oil painting or similar art or craft?

   Think about it; what you decide is all for your mind. Eliminate the boredom that comes with the same old, same old. Try something new, just for you.
